TikTok Enters Japan’s Online Shopping Market
(Reuters) – Chinese social media platform TikTok will enter the online shopping industry in Japan within the next few months, as reported by the Nikkei newspaper on Sunday.
The company is preparing to recruit sellers soon for its e-commerce arm TikTok Shop in Japan, citing a source involved in the operations.
TikTok did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment.
TikTok Shop allows users to run livestreams selling products ranging from sneakers to eyeshadow, enabling them to earn a commission on sales. The platform is recognized for offering discounted products.
TikTok aims to expand its business beyond the U.S., where it is awaiting a deal to secure its presence. In March, TikTok Shop launched for users in France, Germany, and Italy, furthering its reach in Europe.
Last week, U.S. President Donald Trump indicated that a deal concerning the platform’s future might take more time, amid signs of a potential resolution to tariffs between the U.S. and China.
Earlier, Trump extended the deadline for TikTok to divest its U.S. assets for the second time, confirming that a potential deal remains “on the table.”
The future of TikTok in the U.S., a platform used by nearly half of all Americans, remains uncertain. A 2024 law, which gained overwhelming bipartisan support, requires its China-based parent, ByteDance, to divest the app by January 19.
