The Mystery of Satoshi Nakamoto
Since Bitcoin’s inception, much speculation surrounds its creator, Satoshi Nakamoto. An upcoming HBO documentary promises to reveal Nakamoto’s identity, intensifying this debate.
Betting on Satoshi’s Identity
Prediction market Polymarket is taking bets on who the documentary will name as Satoshi.
Leading Candidates
As of October 8, 2024, Len Sassaman is seen as the top candidate with a 45% chance. Sassaman, a cryptographer and privacy advocate, is noted for his ties to cypherpunk communities, despite having passed away in 2011.
Following him is Hal Finney, a cryptography pioneer and one of Bitcoin’s earliest users, with a 15% chance. Finney received the first Bitcoin transaction from Nakamoto, fueling speculation about his potential involvement.
Other less likely candidates include:
– Nick Szabo (2% chance), recognized for contributions to digital contracts but viewed skeptically by the betting market.
– Adam Back (7% chance), creator of Hashcash, also considered but with low probability.
– Craig Wright, who claims to be Nakamoto, has only a 1% chance due to widespread skepticism in the Bitcoin community.
Uncertainty Ahead
Interestingly, 38% of bettors think the documentary may name multiple people or reveal no identity at all. As the release of the documentary nears, the cryptocurrency community remains in suspense.
