OpenAI’s Potential Social Media Network
(Reuters) – OpenAI is developing its own X-like social media platform, according to a report by the Verge on Tuesday, which cited several sources familiar with the matter.
Internal Prototype
The company has created an internal prototype centered around ChatGPT’s image generation features, incorporating a social feed.
Feedback from Outsiders
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has been soliciting feedback from external stakeholders regarding this early-stage project. The future of the social platform—whether it will launch as a standalone application or be integrated into ChatGPT—remains uncertain.
Tensions with Elon Musk
This initiative could heighten tensions between Altman and Elon Musk, co-founder of OpenAI and current owner of X. Musk, who left OpenAI in 2018, has been vocal about his discontent with the organization’s current direction.
Recent Feuds
The rivalry escalated when Musk’s consortium offered $97.4 billion for OpenAI control, which Altman rejected. Musk also filed a lawsuit against OpenAI, claiming they had strayed from their original mission to develop beneficial AI. OpenAI counter-sued earlier this month, alleging a pattern of harassment by Musk, with a jury trial scheduled for spring next year.
Competition with Meta
An OpenAI social network may also put the company in competition with Meta, which is reportedly launching its own Meta AI service. Altman acknowledged this on X, referencing media reports on Meta’s plans by saying, “ok fine maybe we’ll do a social app.”
Both Meta and X leverage large amounts of data from user-generated content on their platforms to enhance their AI training models.
