Meta Platforms Inc. Seeks Nuclear Energy Developers
Meta Platforms Inc (NASDAQ:META) announced plans to issue a “request for proposals” aimed at identifying nuclear energy developers. The goal is to deliver 1-4 gigawatts of new nuclear generation capacity in the U.S. by 2030, which will support the energy-intensive operations of its data centers related to its artificial intelligence (AI) initiatives.
The rising demand for electricity in the U.S. is primarily driven by the expansion of AI and cloud computing, particularly propelled by major tech companies.
For instance, Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) has announced plans to restart a nuclear reactor at Three Mile Island as part of its energy strategy, also to support its AI server operations.
Nuclear energy, recognized for being nearly carbon-free and generally more reliable than renewable energy sources like solar and wind, is increasingly appealing to tech companies working to meet their climate objectives while ensuring a stable power supply.
Meta stated, "We are looking to identify developers that can help accelerate the availability of new nuclear generators and create sufficient scale to achieve material cost reductions by deploying multiple units, both to provide for Meta’s future energy needs and to advance broader industry decarbonization."
