Meta Platforms Develops AI-Based Search Engine

(Reuters) – Meta Platforms is developing an artificial intelligence-based search engine to decrease reliance on Alphabet's Google and Microsoft's Bing, according to a report from The Information on Monday.

The AI search engine market is intensifying with competitors like OpenAI, Google, and Microsoft trying to assert dominance in this rapidly changing landscape.

The new web crawler from Meta will provide conversational responses regarding current events through Meta AI, which operates on platforms such as WhatsApp, Instagram, and Facebook, as reported by an insider involved in the strategy.

Currently, Meta depends on Google and Bing for answers concerning news, stocks, and sports.

Meta did not respond immediately to Reuters' request for comments.

Google is actively integrating its latest AI model, Gemini, into essential products like Search to enhance conversational and user-friendly search experiences.

OpenAI, supported by its largest investor Microsoft, requires web access via Bing to address topical inquiries.

However, there are rising concerns regarding copyright infringement and just compensation for content creators when scraping web data to train AI models and search engines.

Recently, Meta announced that its AI chatbot would utilize Reuters' content to provide real-time answers to user queries regarding news and current affairs.
