Tesla's Upcoming Robotaxi Plans

Investing.com — Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) is set to unveil its long-awaited robotaxi offering this week, stirring investor interest and driving the stock higher.

Shares in Tesla have surged over 43% in the last four months, despite ongoing concerns about modest growth expectations in its electric vehicle business. This event was postponed from early August to allow Tesla additional time for product tweaks and prototype development, according to Wells Fargo analysts.

The robotaxi, referred to as the Cybercab, is a new form of transportation that will autonomously transport passengers, as explained by Tesla CEO Elon Musk. Musk compared the service to a "combination of Airbnb and Uber (NYSE:UBER)."

Musk estimated that the robotaxi division could escalate Tesla's valuation to $5 trillion from its current $770 billion.

RBC Capital Markets analysts predict the global robotaxi market could generate $1.7 trillion in revenue by 2040, with several companies competing for a slice of this lucrative industry.

As a result, investors are eager for more information about the logistics and economics of the robotaxi unit during the highly anticipated event in Los Angeles on Oct. 10. Wells Fargo analysts expressed hope for in-person demonstrations of the latest autonomous vehicle technology.

Tesla also faces the challenge of proving its unique approach that relies on cameras and artificial intelligence for operation, unlike other players using radar and lidar technology, which can be costly.

Uncertainty looms around the potential high cash burn of the robotaxi division, strategies to drive usage, and the timeline for earning regulatory approval. Analysts question whether Tesla will address these critical issues or if the event will merely serve as a fan rally.
