Alphabet’s $3.3 Billion Investment in South Carolina
(Reuters) – Alphabet (NASDAQ:GOOGL) plans to invest $3.3 billion in South Carolina to build two new data centers, CEO Sundar Pichai announced. This move comes as the Google parent company and its competitors heavily invest in infrastructure to support AI application development.
The search engine giant will establish two new data center campuses in Dorchester County and expand its existing campus in Berkeley County, as stated by the South Carolina governor’s office on Thursday.
The new facilities in Dorchester County, located in the Pine Hill Business Campus in Ridgeville and the Winding Woods Commerce Park in St. George, represent a $2 billion investment and will create 200 new operational jobs. Alphabet will also invest $1.3 billion in Berkeley County, according to the statement.
In July, Alphabet reported a capital expenditure of $13 billion for the June quarter and stated that its quarterly capital expenditure for the rest of 2024 would be at or above $12 billion.
In a related note, Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) partnered with BlackRock (NYSE:BLK) and Abu Dhabi-backed investment firm MGX to launch a $30 billion fund aimed at investing in AI infrastructure for data centers and energy projects.
