Rumors of Bitcoin Mining at the US Department of Defense

Earlier today, rumors circulated on social media about a covert Bitcoin (BTC) mining operation at the US Department of Defense (DoD).

The speculation was sparked by a claim from a worker at the BTC ATM company Byte Federal, and further amplified by Jason Lowery. Notable investors such as Michael Saylor, Matthew Pines, and David Bailey shared screenshots of posts hinting at significant upcoming federal developments.

Despite lacking solid evidence, the rumor gained traction and garnered hundreds of thousands of impressions.

On March 6, 2025, President Donald Trump established a Strategic Bitcoin Reserve and another Digital Asset Stockpile, neither of which involves mining.

However, Trump has previously supported BTC mining, notably during last summer’s presidential campaign. He stated, “BTC mining may be our last line of defense against a CBDC. Biden’s hatred of BTC only helps China, Russia, and the Radical Communist Left. We want all the remaining Bitcoin to be MADE IN THE USA!!! It will help us be ENERGY DOMINANT!!!” in June.

Despite the government’s awareness of mining’s environmental impact, neither the US Department of Defense nor any other US government entity has officially acknowledged mining BTC.
