Sam Bankman-Fried Seeks Trump Pardon After FTX Collapse, But What Are His Odds?

Three years ago, Sam Bankman-Fried was a significant figure in Washington, D.C., donating heavily to Joe Biden’s 2020 campaign. He is now seeking a pardon from Trump after his crypto exchange FTX collapsed, leading to a 25-year prison sentence.

SBF’s High Profile Efforts To Seek Pardon

Currently, Bankman-Fried is trying to change his fate by requesting a pardon from former President Trump. His attempts include making appearances on conservative media, like an unsanctioned segment on The Tucker Carlson Show, which resulted in him being placed in solitary confinement.

While Carlson didn’t specifically inquire about a pardon, he expressed interest in some Republican perspectives, igniting speculation within the community regarding a potential pardon from Trump after the broadcast. Following the interview, the prediction platform Polymarket indicated that the likelihood of a Sam Bankman-Fried pardon nearly doubled.

According to The New York Times, he’s consulting with a lawyer who is close to Trump, and his father even penned an opinion piece supporting Trump’s proposed sovereign wealth fund.

Insiders Doubtful Over His Chances

Yet, despite these efforts, insiders express skepticism about his prospects. One anonymous crypto lobbyist assessed his chances of receiving a pardon as “zero,” stating, “Sorry, it’s Trump world… near zero.”

While the possibility of Bankman-Fried obtaining a pardon isn’t completely off the table—Trump has shown prior support for crypto and granted a pardon to Silk Road founder Ross Ulbricht, a revered figure in the crypto sector—it is important to note that Ulbricht had substantial backing in the community, whereas Bankman-Fried faces considerable animosity following the FTX downfall and the resulting crypto decline.

SBF’s family, including his parents Joe Bankman and Barbara Fried, are seeking assistance from a lawyer linked to Trump’s earlier campaigns to aid in securing a pardon. Despite not contacting Trump directly, they remain hopeful that his transactional perspective on clemency may work to their advantage. Nonetheless, their clemency efforts have struggled to gain traction.

On a contrasting note, a crypto lobbyist mentioned to Fortune that Bankman-Fried’s prospects could be improving due to Trump’s expanding connections with the crypto industry and his inclination to grant pardons. Nevertheless, the lobbyist emphasized that the broader crypto community hasn’t prioritized Bankman-Fried’s case, making a pardon still appear improbable.
